Revenge? Justice? Only love will do.

I’m more than a little uneasy about the celebrations surrounding Osama bin Laden’s death. This quote from Martin Luther King comes to my mind:

16 August 1967
Where Do We Go From Here?

Delivered at the 11th Annual SCLC Convention, Atlanta, Ga.

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.
Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.
Through violence you may murder the liar,
but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.
Through violence you may murder the hater,
but you do not murder hate.
In fact, violence merely increases hate.
So it goes.
Returning violence for violence multiplies violence,
adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness:
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

Dr  Martin Luther King, Jr

  1. I too have found the celebrations involved in the death of Bin Laden in bad taste. Yes he was a bad man, Yes he probably deserved the death he got but did we need to demean it by celebrating in the manner done. Perhaps a little decorum would have seemed less insensitive xx

  2. I agree. It’s like when Maggie Thatcher was bombed in Brighton, the folk I was with seemed to think that was an OK option…as if they thought it would actually have solved the problem.
