Enter the world of Mississippi in the 1960s and meet Aibileen and Minnie, two black domestic maids, and Skeeter who is white and wants to write a book. But the book in question is the story of the lives of black women who bring up white folks’ children and cook and clean but can’t share their toilets.
This is a shocking book because it happened in my lifetime. It is a shocking book because it tells the story of racism and it is far too close for comfort. It is a shocking book because at times it is funny and disgraceful and courageous. I couldn’t put it down. And I can’t recommend it highly enough. 5 stars.
