Remarkable Creatures

The last book from the holiday reading has been perused and enjoyed. It was Tracy Chevalier’s Remarkable Creatures. There are a few authors whose books I will buy without even reading the blurb on the back. Salley Vickers is one, and Tracy Chevalier is another.

There are always strong women characters in her books and this one is no exception. Two women from different classes in the 19th century  meet on the beach at Lyme Regis searching for fossils. They learn from one another, become friends, fall out and come back again. But above the story of their friendship there is a scientific background where women were never recognised for their contribution. The men in the tale flit in and out but it is the women who hold the narrative.

I loved the story, loved the characters and loved the way it was woven together. Another classic.
