Mermaids and Freud

Read another couple of books in case you are interested…

The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd. Our Book Group really enjoyed her first book (The Secret Life of Bees) so I thought I’d give this one a go. Jessie is married to a psychiatrist with a lovely daughter at college when she receives a phone call to say her mother has chopped off one of her fingers. She goes home to her remote island home and encounters Brother Thomas at the local Benedictine monastery. The rest is a tale of mermaids, girl power, saints, fingers and an affair. Thoroughly recommended.

Where Three Roads Meet by Salley Vickers. Last year I bought a ticket to go and hear Salley Vickers at the Borders Book Festival. I have loved all her books (Miss Garnet’s Angel, Mr Golightly’s Holiday etc) and was a little disappointed to hear that her latest was a specially commissioned book about the retelling of myths. This one is about Freud’s last days and his encounters with Oedipus. Quite. Anyway found it in a secondhand bookshop in St Andrew’s this week and read it on the bus home. It is weird.
