Lost in limbo

Pope Benedict XVI is apparantly preparing to close the gates of limbo. For 700 years Roman Catholics have held the belief that babies who died before they had a chance to be baptised went to this celestial holding area. There they waited in a state of ‘natural joy’ before entering Paradise on Judgement Day. Or maybe until their mums picked them up on the way ‘home’.

I think some of the bearded ancients also hung out there. I quite liked the idea of these old men and women looking after the wee ones, telling them stories and sharing their wisdom.

The whole concept was born out of uncertainty. OK, it was a fudge but I think the intention was well meant. And it’s certainty in the Church that scares me.
