RevRuth’s Rantings

Book reviews

You may remember that as part of my Lenten discipline I have decided not to read fiction this Lent. However I did make one exemption for our Book Group and have just finished The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud by Ben Sherwood. What an interesting novel. It is about two brothers, one of whom dies as a youngster but they continue to communicate with each other. It raised all sorts of questions for me about letting go and about Resurrection bodies!

So my question is: What would your Resurrection body look like? At what point in your life were you happiest with the way you looked? For me I think I would be about 25 but sadly although I looked my best it was not a particularly healthy time.

Have also finished Spiritual Emotions by Robert C Roberts for a book review I am doing. This is an academic book and looks at the psychology of Christian virtues. Yes, remember After Virtue that we all had to read at University – well this is a follow on, kind of. It is a study of six of the ‘fruits of the Spirit’, namely contrition, joy, gratitude, hope, peace and compassion.

Just to add… that in our Book Group last night we spent the longest time ever discussing The Death and Life etc. All enjoyed it except Rev J who thought it wasn’t dark enough. Fair comment.
