Spent all of yesterday at the Nexus exhibition at the SECC staffing the SEC stall. We smiled, nay twinkled, and accosted passers by with the new SEC leaflet and latest issue of Inspires.
The big marketing tool of these exhibitions is the carrier bag. If you can get someone to take one of your bags then it is the visible witness to all and sundry as they stuff the copious quantities of leaflets into it. We did have carrier bags but were not allowed to use them because the logo had been printed upside down on one side of them. Is an upside down mitre bad luck, do you think? It did occur to me that in these days of Fair Trade parishes and Eco-congregations that perhaps we ought to have recycled/able paper carriers instead – or even have a hessian or fairtrade cotton re-usable one?
In between twinkling at passers-by I did manage to have a scamper round the other stalls. Ordered two new clerical shirts cos there’s nothing quite like a made-to-measure. Also purchased two books from the Iona Community stall (Fire and Bread, and Hay and Stardust, in case you are interested).
All in all I was rather disappointed at the choice of exhibitors. Or rather, lack of choice. There was no Communion Wine tasting, no wafer comparisons, no hymns on CDs to listen to, and no J&Ms. Ah well, maybe next time.

What’s a J&Ms?

J&Ms are probably the cheapest ecclesiastical outfitters (in Newcastle). Every ordinand goes there first to be measured for all their requirements. J and M are the two sisters who first set up the company. Jean and Margaret? I think they are still there.
